The city of Lucca is completely enclosed by
massive defensive walls that were built in the 1500's. There are roads around
the top of them and barracks for soldiers inside them. These are among the best
preserved Renaissance defences in Europe.
Lucca is a peaceful city of narrow streets
and although it only takes 15 minutes to walk from one side to the other, there are
one hundred churches within the walls. There is an abundance of spacious piazzas
and impressive towers. It is particularly enjoyable to hire bicycles and cycle
around the city.
Shopping is particularly pleasant as it is
possible to walk everywhere, and when you have had enough, there are plenty of
cafés and bars to sit and enjoy an espresso and a panino!
Lucca is 20 minutes
drive from Podere Consani.
