Siena

Siena is a city of steep medieval alleys surrounding the fan-shaped Piazza del Campo, now famous for Tuscany's most celebrated festival - the Sienese Palio.

This bareback horse race was first recorded in 1283. The jockeys represent the 17 contrade, or districts, of Siena. The horses are chosen by the drawing of straws and then blessed by the local contrada churches. There is spectacular pageantry preceding the race and the winner is awarded a palio (banner).

This medieval city is built on seven hills, affording in places superb views over the city and beyond. There are wonderful buildings to visit such as the Palazzo Publico in the Piazza del Campo. The bell tower (Torre del Mangia), at 102m, is the second highest medieval tower to be built in Italy.

Siena has a spectacular Duomo, built in full gothic style. It has black and white striped marble walls and columns, together with intricate inlaid marble floors.    Siena is 2 hours drive from Podere Consani.
