Siena is a city of
steep medieval alleys surrounding the fan-shaped Piazza del Campo, now famous
for Tuscany's most celebrated festival - the Sienese Palio.
horse race was first recorded in 1283. The jockeys represent the 17 contrade, or
districts, of Siena. The horses are chosen by the drawing of straws and then
blessed by the local contrada churches. There is spectacular pageantry preceding
the race and the winner is awarded a palio (banner).
medieval city is built on seven hills, affording in places superb
views over the city and beyond. There are wonderful buildings to
visit such as the Palazzo Publico in the Piazza del Campo. The bell
tower (Torre del Mangia), at 102m, is the second highest medieval
tower to be built in Italy.
Siena has a
spectacular Duomo, built in full gothic style. It has black and
white striped marble walls and columns, together with intricate
inlaid marble floors. Siena is 2 hours drive from Podere Consani.
